Project 4.1 on nuclear fallout effects in the Pacific, 1954. US medical worker examining residents of the Marshall Islands in the Pacific following the detonation of Castle Bravo (Operation Castle), an atom bomb test carried out on 1 March 1954 at Bikini Atoll. The yield was larger than expected, and the fallout affected around 239 people on the nearby Rongelap, Ailinginae, and Utirik atolls, also part of the Marshall Islands. Medical testing as part of Project 4.1 began days after the test, and continued annually. By the 1970s, thyroid cancers were being diagnosed due to exposure to radioactive isotopes of iodine. Millions of US dollars were paid out in compensation to those affected. | |
