Global chlorophyll concentrations, 2008 to 2018. The colours in the oceans show the concentrations of chlorophyll, which is due to the presence of large blooms of algae and other phytoplankton. These microscopic marine organisms are an important part of the ocean's food chain because many animals, such as small fish and whales, feed on them. The colours range from high concentrations (white/yellow/green) down to low concentrations (blue). These monthly datasets are from January 2008 to May 2018, showing the seasonal variations, and were obtained by the MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) sensor on NASA's Aqua satellite | |
