Coral showing signs of bleaching around its edges. Bleaching is caused by the expulsion of the coral polyps' symbiotic algae, which give the coral its colour and provide much of its nutrients. The algae are ejected from the polyps in response to stress, commonly due to high water temperatures due to climate change. Bleached corals may die if they do not recover quickly, and prolonged warm spells can lead to mass dyings. Filmed in Mayotte in the Indian Ocean. | |
