Low cloud over hills, showing a build-up of cloud on the windward side (left) and a clear side downwind. This is a small-scale example of a rain shadow effect, where moist air is forced to rise by a hill, dropping precipitation as it rises. As the air passes the peak, it is drier and more dense, and descends on the other side, warming up rapidly and evaporating any remaining moisture. On a large scale this causes foehn winds, which can rapidly warm downslope areas. | |
