Model of the inside of the Diros Caves, in Laconia, Greece. These caves are part of a complex carved in limestone by a subterranean river. The cave complex is thought to cover some 33, 000 square metres, and around five kilometres has been explored and is accessible for visitors. The caves were inhabited in palaeolithic and neolithic times, but human occupation ended in 4 BCE, following an earthquake. Numerous prehistoric artefacts have been found in the caves. | |
