Trappist-1 planets. Animation of the seven planets orbiting TRAPPIST-1, an ultra-cool dwarf star. The planets appear in the order of innermost to outermost planets. TRAPPIST-1 is about the size of the planet Jupiter. Its planets are tidally locked, with one side permanently facing the star. The two closest planets are the warmest, and the two outer planets are the coldest. Three planets, TRAPPIST-1e, f and g, orbit in the habitable zone, with varying amounts of liquid water present. This system has been studied using NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope (SST) and the ground-based TRAPPIST (Transiting Planets and Planetesimals Small Telescope). TRAPPIST-1 is 39 light years from Earth, in the constellation of Aquarius. The planets were discovered in 2015 and 2017. | |
