Clouds over the Pacific Ocean. Time-lapse animation, based on satellite data, of clouds forming and moving over the central and eastern Pacific Ocean, and parts of the Americas. The data used to create this animated globe is obtained by geostationary infrared satellites. In comparison to clouds, the Earth's surface, even on very cold nights, is warm. When there are clouds, they absorb the radiation emitted by the Earth below and emit their own radiation at a much cooler temperature. Any area that has clouds shows up cooler than the ground, allowing the clouds to be detected. The satellites that collect this data are geostationary, meaning that they remain over the same part of the Earth. The Earth globe background is from the 'Blue Marble' dataset. This animation uses a transparent alpha channel. | |
