Atomic bomb destruction, Hiroshima, Japan. Footage of the ruins of the Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall in Hiroshima, Japan, part of the destruction caused by the atomic bomb dropped by a US bomber on 6 August 1945 during World War II. This building was 160 metres from ground zero. It was later preserved as the Hiroshima Peace Memorial. The city of Hiroshima was destroyed by the 13-kiloton nuclear weapon. Around 90 percent of the buildings were destroyed, with only a few concrete-reinforced buildings surviving. Some 70, 000 people died instantly, with tens of thousands more dying in the aftermath. The nuclear bombing of Nagasaki followed on 9 August, and Japan surrendered a few days later. | |
