Combustion of a strip of magnesium metal held over the flame of a Bunsen burner. Magnesium is a reactive metal that burns vigorously when heated in air, with a brilliant white flame. The reaction with oxygen in the air produces white unreactive magnesium oxide. Midway through the burning of this ribbon, a 10-stop neutral density filter was applied to the camera lens, which blocks much of the light and allows the thin tendril of oxidised magnesium to be seen inside the flame. | |
