Apollo 13 mission control scenes after explosion. Footage of mission controllers for the Apollo 13 mission after the explosion that occurred on 13 April 1970, two days into this lunar mission. An oxygen tank had exploded and damaged the spacecraft. Over the following days, mission control devised and extensively tested a series of critical changes to give the crew the best chances of survival. Mission control initiated an abort course change, and devised ways to scrub carbon dioxide from the crew's air supply, to safely power up the spacecraft before re-entry, and to achieve safe separation between the spacecraft modules before re-entry. The crew of three survived in one of the modules for four days as the spacecraft passed behind the Moon and back towards Earth. The crew splashed down in the Pacific Ocean on 17 April 1970. This footage was filmed at the Manned Spacecraft Center, Houston, Texas, USA. | |
