Apollo 13 television broadcast, Germany. Footage of US military personnel at the Rhein-Main Air Base, Frankfurt, Germany, watching a live television broadcast of the splashdown during the Apollo 13 mission. This was part of the worldwide news coverage of the dramatic events during this mission. On 13 April 1970, two days into this lunar mission, an oxygen tank exploded and damaged the spacecraft. The crew of three survived in one of the modules for four days as the spacecraft passed behind the Moon and back towards Earth. The rescue plan devised by mission control worked, and the crew splashed down in the early morning local time in the south-western Pacific Ocean on 17 April 1970 at 18:07 UTC (19:07 in Frankfurt). This footage was filmed on 17 April 1970. | |
