Animation of a flight to the surface of Titan, passing Saturn and descending through clouds to show the Huygens probe on the surface. Titan is the largest moon of Saturn, and the only moon in the Solar System with a substantial atmosphere. Huygens landed on Titan on 14th January 2005, having been carried to the Saturn system on the Cassini spacecraft. Huygens took photos of its landing site, revealing a plain strewn with pebbles and rocks. The temperature was about -180 degrees Celsius, and the atmospheric pressure about 1.4 times that of Earth. The atmosphere is mostly nitrogen with some methane and ethane, and lakes of the hydrocarbons are present on the surface, topped up by irregular rainfall. | |
