Gas chromatography (GC) procedure for separating mixtures of volatile compounds. The mixture (whisky) is injected into the vaporiser port and heated. The sample is transported through spiral tube (column) by the flow of nitrogen, the gaseous mobile phase. Particles of polyethylene glycol coating the inside surface of the column constitute the stationary phase, impeding the flow of different substances (ethanal, ethanol and ethanoic acid) by different degrees. Components are identified by comparing their retention times (time taken to reach the detector) with those of known compounds. Quantitative analysis of the mixture is based on the size of the peaks recorded. | |
