Nylon synthesis experiment. Footage of a nylon strand being drawn out of a mass of nylon in a laboratory container. This nylon synthesis experiment is also known as the 'nylon rope trick'. The nylon has formed at the interface between an organic layer and an aqueous (water) layer. Nylon is a synthetic fibre that is formed by the condensation polymerization of amine-containing molecules and carboxylic acid-containing molecules to form long chains called polymers. Nylon is used to make fabrics, and also ropes and some medical prosthetics. For footage of the start of this experiment, see clip K005/7924. | |
