Columbia disaster, external tank descent after launch. Footage of the shuttle's external tank descending through the atmosphere after the the launch of mission STS-107, flown by the Space Shuttle Columbia. This mission launched on 16 January 2003 at 10:39 EST (15:39 UTC), from the Kennedy Space Center, Florida, USA. The external tanks from shuttle launches were not recovered and broke up in the atmosphere with the debris landing in the Indian or Pacific oceans. A common problem during shuttle launches was pieces of foam (orange) detaching from the external tank. A foam strike during this launch damaged Columbia. This caused the shuttle to break up on re-entry on 1 February 2003, killing all seven on board. The members of the crew were US astronauts Rick Husband, William McCool, David M. Brown, Kalpana Chawla, Michael P. Anderson and Laurel Clark, and Israeli astronaut Ilan Ramon. |
