Pyroclastic flow covering farmland near Sinabung volcano, Sumatra, Indonesia. Pyroclastic flows are clouds of hot gas and rock that can be formed by some types of volcanic eruption. They typically flow down the flanks of a volcano at high speed, several hundred kilometres per hour, and can have temperatures higher than 1000 degrees Celsius. Such clouds are rapidly lethal to any living thing encountered, and will ignite any flammable material they touch. | |
