Stenotelegraph. Animated historical illustration of a device called a stenotelegraph, invented by a French civil engineer called Cassagnes. It was used in the French Chamber of Deputies in 1890, combining shorthand typing (stenography) with telegraphy. This machine enabled up to 200 words per minutes to be transmitted by telegraphy between French cities, with speeches thousands of words long transmitted in just one hour. Artwork from 'Electricite' (1911) by Max de Nansouty, part of the 'Les merveilles de la science' series of 1867-1891 by Louis Figuier. | |
