Concentration in chemical solutions. Animation showing differences in chemical concentration in aqueous solutions. The animation shows two solutions of hydrochloric acid (HCl) of different concentrations. At left is a 1 molar (1M) solution, with a 4 molar (4M) solution at right. The animation zooms in to each solution to show the relative concentration of hydrogen ions (H+, grey) and chloride ions (Cl-, green), with the 4M solution having four times the number of molecules in the same volume. The 4M solution is four times as concentrated and more collisions and reactions will take place when this solution is used in a reaction. This is an example of the collision theory of chemical reactions (see also clip K005/4860). | |
