Gale Crater on Mars. A mixture of footage and simulated views of the rocky landscape in the Gale Crater on Mars. This crater was caused by an asteroid impact millions of years ago. The Mars Curiosity rover landed here on 6 August 2012, on a mission to investigate the Martian climate and geology. It has found evidence of ancient streams, deltas and lakes suggests the Gale Crater held a vast lake more than three billion years ago. Currently, Mars is a rocky desert world with no surface water. The atmosphere is mostly carbon dioxide and Martian surface temperatures are well below freezing. | |
