The Moon. Enhanced colour view of the Moon seen through a telescope during the waxing gibbous phase. The varied colours of the lunar surface indicate the various types of mineral deposits. The dark regions are Maria ( seas ); plains of basaltic lava from ancient volcanic eruptions. They are rich in titanium and iron oxides, and the blue hues reveal particularly titanium-rich areas. Various prominent craters are visible, including the Tycho crater (in the south) which is 86 kilometres wide and around 5 kilometres deep, and the Copernicus crater (central) which is 93 kilometres wide. Both have distinctive ray systems forming spokes hundreds of kilometres in length. | |
