Toxoplasmosis of brain. Light microscopy footage zooming in from a sample of infected brain tissue in a case of toxoplasmosis. This disease is caused by the single-celled parasite Toxoplasma gondii. It is contracted via contact with infected cat faeces or raw meat. The parasite infects nervous and muscle tissue. In most people it remains inactive in cysts, but in immune suppressed individuals, such as AIDS patients, the parasite replicates, killing the surrounding cells. The most common symptom of cerebral toxoplasmosis is encephalitis (swelling of the brain). Treatment is with antibiotics.
