DNA transcription. Animation of the process of transcription of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA, helical strand) to produce a complementary copy of ribonucleic acid (RNA). This is done by the enzyme RNA polymerase (red). As it moves along the DNA strand, nucleic acid bases in the surrounding medium are matched with the DNA and linked together to produce a strand of RNA. There are various forms of RNA. If the RNA codes for producing a protein, it is known as messenger RNA (mRNA). RNA and the process of transcription allows the genetic information contained in DNA in a cell's nucleus to control the key functions of a cell. For a close-up of this process, see clip K004/6780. | |
