Animated atom probe microscope model of a flight through the atoms of an aluminium alloy containing copper and tin precipitates. This alloy is used in structural components of aircraft and high-tech sports gear such as bike frames. It is resistant to fatigue and has a high strength-to-weight ratio. Each grey dot shows the position of a single atom of aluminium, the orange dots indicate copper atoms and the green dots indicate tin atoms. To aid visualisation, not all the aluminium atoms are shown. Tin tends to be found in the smaller clusters and copper in the larger plates. These structures develop as the alloy is heated to 200 degrees Celsius. This sample is 68 nanometres wide. | |
