Phagocytosis, animation. Phagocytosis is the ingestion of large particles such as bacteria and cell debris via large endocytic vessels called phagosomes. A bacterial cell (yellow and pink) has been bound to specific receptors (yellow) on the cell surface and then enclosed within a phagosome. A vesicle containing a proton pump then fuses with the phagosome and transports protons into it. This creates an acidic environment in the phagosome, which causes the receptors to disassociate. The receptors leave the phagosome and are recycled back to the cell membrame. The phagosome then fuses with a lysosome, which contains enzymes that break the bacterial cell down. | |
