| Sunlight to chemical energy conversion. Animation showing the electron transfer process (arrows) that is the basis of photosynthesis by which plants store energy from sunlight in the form of chemical energy. Chorophyll (green bar) is the key chemical, acting as an intermediate between chemicals that donate electrons (an electron donor, blue bar) and chemicals that accept electrons (an electron acceptor, yellow bar). The electrons (red) are boosted in energy from donor to acceptor by passing through an electron transport chain involving chlorophyll and sunlight. The effect of sunlight on the electrons is known as photoexcitation. Chemicals involved in the photosynthetic reaction centre include water (a typical weak electron donor), and acceptors such as quinones, the final stage in plants being the production of the reduced form of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH).
