Cell signalling process. Animation showing the normal function of a receptor that in its mutated form causes a form of cancer. A protooncogene that codes for a Ras protein can mutate into an oncogene. This protein plays an intermediate role in the transfer of proliferating signal from the cell membrane to the nucleus. When operating normally, this protein acts only briefly. The receptor (yellow, upper right) binds with a growth factor (red). This results in a proliferating signal (centre, red and blue dots) to the nucleus (lower centre). In the mutated form, this signal is continuous, resulting in cancer. For this animation without labels, see K004/2693. For an animation of the process with a mutated receptor, see K004/2694. | |
