Golgi apparatus transport mechanism. Animation showing the transport of enzymes from the endoplasmic reticulum (left) through the Golgi apparatus on specialised flattened membranes called cisternae (centre). The enzymes (here, hydrolases) are labelled with carrier chemicals and transported to the trans-Golgi cisterna in lysosomes (round). Microtubules and motor proteins (top) move the cisternae and enzymes across the cell. As the enzymes are transferred to the cis-Golgi cisterna, the carrier chemicals are transported back by reverse traffic. This allows them to be used again for further transport. For this animation with labels, see K004/2685. | |
