Close-up of the eye of a leaf scorpionfish (Taenianotus triacanthus). This fish has shape, colour and texture resembling a leaf, or the coral and sponges common in its habitat. It uses this cryptic colouration to hide from predators and prey. If a prey item, such as a small fish or crustacean, passes nearby, it engulfs it with a sudden gulp. The leaf scorpionfish is found in tropical seas with coral reefs throughout the Indo-Pacific region. Filmed in Palau. | |
