Prostate biopsy surgery. Clip 4 of 9. Surgeon preparing the template (black square) used during biopsy surgery to obtain samples from a male patient's prostate gland. This patient has raised PSA (prostate specific antigen) levels, which is an indicator of potential problems with the prostate. This can range from benign conditions to cancer. This procedure involves inserting prostate biopsy needles through the patient's perineal skin using a template (black square). The template allows a record to be made of where the sample was taken. The needles are guided to the prostate gland using a trans-rectal ultrasound probe (grey). The samples will be tested for cancerous cells. The same process is used to insert radioactive sources to kill any cancerous cells that are present. For the entire sequence see clips K003/1548 to K003/1556. | |
