Timelapse footage of the combustion of a sample of sodium metal in air. Sodium is a soft, highly reactive alkali metal that burns spontaneously on exposure to atmospheric oxygen. This forms a layer of white sodium oxide, before the heat of the combustion melts the metal, which forms a rounded droplet. The continued burning of the metal in oxygen eventually produces solid yellow sodium peroxide. | |
