Global coral reef heat stress anomalies on 23 April 2023. The Coral Reef Watch program, run by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), uses satellite data to track current environmental conditions of coral reefs. This helps identify areas at risk of coral bleaching, which occurs when corals lose their symbiotic algae and their distinctive colours due to heat stress. If coral is severely bleached, it can lead to disease and partial mortality, and the entire colony may die. The sea surface temperature scale ranges from -5 to +5 degrees Celsius. Positive numbers mean the temperature is warmer than average and negative means cooler than average. | |
