Adult red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris ssp. leucourus). This tree squirrel is common throughout Europe and Asia. They are famed for their orange-red fur and large bushy tails, almost as long as their bodies. Red squirrels need woodland to survive. They rely on trees for food, with their diet mainly made up of seeds and nuts. The number of red squirrels in the UK, Ireland and Italy has decreased drastically in recent years due to the introduction of grey squirrels. Photographed in June, in Dorset, UK. | |
