Illustration of a disulphide bond, or disulphide bridge, between two beta strands in human gamma-crystallin, a protein found in the lens of the eye. The regular arrangement of the protein in the lens is thought to be responsible for its transparency. Increased disulphide bond formation in gamma-crystallin leads to aggregations of the protein that are though to cause the lens-clouding disease cataracts. | |
