Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a freeze-fracture through the uppermost layer of keratinised gingiva. The keratinised gingiva is the gum tissue immediately around the teeth. It has a pale pink colour, which is a result of the abundance of fibres and the relative lack of blood vessels in the tissue. It protects the soft tissue around the tooth from injury. The picture was created as part of a cooperation with Quintessenz Publishing. Magnification: x900 when printed at 15cm wide. | |
