La Silla Observatory at night, Chile. Along the horizon are ESO's 3.58-metre New Technology Telescope (left) and 3.6-metre telescope (right). Arching across the night sky is the Milk Way galaxy. The large, pink 'fireworks' near the Milky Way are gas nebulae that emit light in the red wavelength range. To the right of the Milky Way, the two Magellanic Clouds are seen as blurry spots. They are the largest of the nearby dwarf galaxies of the Milky Way. At right a cone of light rises obliquely from the horizon. This is the zodiacal light , a diffuse glow from sunlight that is reflected off microscopic dust grains in the solar system. Near the centre, another light can be seen, which is green in colour. This 'airglow' is emitted by atoms high up in the Earth's atmosphere. | |
