Vera C Rubin Observatory, Cerro Pachon, Chile, at night. The Vera C Rubin Observatory is (as of 2022) under construction and due to be completed in 2024. When completed, the observatory will house the 8.4-metre diameter primary mirror of the Simonyi Survey Telescope. The observatory, formerly known as the LSST, was named in honour of Vera C Rubin (1928 - 2016), an American astronomer who pioneered work on galaxy rotation rates. The Milky Way is seen in the night sky above. | |
