Composite image of the barred spiral galaxy NGC 1300. Data from several observatories have been combined to show details of the galaxy's stars and gas. Clouds of cold molecular gas (yellow), which provide the raw material for star formation were imaged with radio light by the Atacama Large Millimetre/submillimetre Array (ALMA). Gas (red and magenta) surrounding young, massive stars was imaged by the Very Large Telescope's Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) instrument. Dust lanes (orange) and very young, hot stars (blue) were imaged with visible and ultraviolet light captured by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). NGC 1300 is a barred spiral galaxy that is around 69 million light years from Earth in the constellation of Eridanus. | |
