Illustrations showing a frontal (left) and sectioned (right) view of a healthy prostate gland (top), an inflamed prostate gland (prostatitis, centre) and a cancerous prostate gland. The prostate is a small gland found in men just below the bladder, surrounding the urethra, the tube urine passes through. It produces a fluid that forms part of the semen. Prostatitis may or may not be caused by a bacterial infection. It can cause pain in the lower abdomen and affect the ability to urinate. Prostate cancer is most prevalent in men over 50 years of age. Treatment is with hormone therapy, radiation therapy, chemotherapy or surgery to remove the prostate. | |
