Spinal cord, illustration. The spinal cord is exposed by removal of vertebral bodies and opening of the covering of dura mater, part of the meninges that also encloses the brain. Extending from the spinal cord are the spinal nerves which are covered by by sleeves of dura as they pass away from the spinal cord. Distally the spinal cord ends at around the L1/L2 vertebra. Beyond this level spinal nerves are shown passing inferiorly to their destinations and referred to as the cauda equina resembling a horse's tail. The dural sheath continues to S4.
