Satellite image showing ground surface temperatures of agricultural and urban areas northwest of Delhi, India, just before midnight on the 5th of May 2022. Nighttime temperatures in Delhi and smaller villages went above 35 degrees Celsius and peaked at 39 degrees Celsius, whilst temperatures in rural areas cooled to 15 degrees Celsius. India underwent a heatwave from mid-March 2022 with March being the hottest March India has had since records began 120 years ago. The satellite image shows 'heat islands' that are warmer due to human activity and materials used in the built environment. Data obtained by the Ecosystem Spaceborne Thermal Radiometer Experiment on Space Station (ECOSTRESS) instrument onboard the International Space Station (ISS). | |
