Redwood sprout after moderate fire damage. When a redwood tree is damaged by fire, wind or human activity, the tree's root system send out sprouts around the remaining stump, in order for the redwoods to reproduce. According to the park rangers, fires are some of the natural events that help redwood seed to get through the layer of decomposing plant material on the forest floor and reach the layer of mineral soil, which allows them to germinate. | |
