When a negatively charged metal ball touches the top terminal of the electroscope, some electrons are transferred from the ball to the electroscope and down to the post and the needle. The balanced needle then deflects from the post because of the electrostatic repulsion. When the charged ball is removed, the electroscope remains charged but the electrons redistribute. As a result, the needle and the post have less charge, and thus the needle is deflected less. | |
