17th century Chinese illustration of a giraffe held by two keepers. This painting is based on earlier paintings made in the 14th century commemorating a giraffe gifted to the Yongle emperor by the King of Bengal. This giraffe was seen as auspicious because it fit the description of a Qilin, a creature from Chinese mythology that appears at the arrival or passing of a sage or ruler. | |
