Light micrograph of a section through the jaw of a foetal cat showing a developing tooth (centre). The bone of the jaw is dark blue. The majority of the tooth is pulp (light pink).The blue arc at upper centre is the dentin of the tooth, which is secreted by odontoblasts (line of pink cells beneath dentin). The dark red cap on the dentin is the enamel covering the crown of the tooth. It is secreted by ameloblast cells (line of pink cells above enamel). Below the tooth is a cavity in the jawbone containing blood vessels and a nerve (purple). Muscles (red) are seen at bottom right and top left and a salivary gland (purple) is at upper left. Stratified squamous epithelium (pink) lies over the jaw at right. Magnification: x15 when printed at 15cm tall.
