Light micrograph of a cross section through a fallopian tube, or oviduct. The fallopian tubes carry the egg from the ovary to the uterus (womb). The central lumen is lined with a moist mucous membrane that contains two types of cells, secretory cells and ciliated cells. The secretory cells secrete mucus, which protects the lining of the fallopian tubes. The ciliated cells are covered in microscopic hair-like structures known as cilia (light blue). These beat in wave-like motions and function to move the egg along the fallopian tube. Magnification: x20 when printed 15 centimetres wide. | |
