| Light micrograph of longitudinally sectioned skeletal muscle. The muscle fibres are arranged in parallel. The striated muscle fibres are multinucleated with the nuclei displaced towards the periphery. Sometimes, some fibres have the nuclei in the centre, this is because the cut has tangentially affected the myocyte. The fibres located at centre show the characteristic striation of skeletal muscle cells. The fibres are very close to each other, being separated by a narrow connective space, called the endomysium, which appears as a narrow, paler band, where a small blood vessel can be identified. | |
