James's flamingo (Phoenicoparrus jamesi) wading through the shallow water of Laguna Chiarcota, Eduardo Avaroa Andean Fauna National Reserve of the Bolivia altiplano. It is home to breeds of flamingoes, who feed by filtering out the algae present in the shallow water. This diet of algae, high in alpha and beta carotenoid pigments, including canthaxanthin, gives the flamingoes their pink colour. | |
