Pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma, light micrograph. Pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma is a rare subtype of astrocytoma (WHO Grade II) that usually occurs in children and young adults. It has a predilection for temporal lobe and majority of the patients present with epilepsy. The tumour is usually well-circumscribed and frequently has solid and cystic components. Microscopically, they consist of spindle cells arranged in intersecting fascicles or storiform pattern admixed with pleomorphic astrocytes. This image shows a cluster of highly pleomorphic astrocytes with bizarre, hyperchromatic nuclei as well as multinucleation. | |
