Sunspots on the Sun, October 1989. Sunspots (dark areas) seen on the photosphere of the Sun, taken in white light on 13 October 1989. Sunspots are found in the solar atmosphere and appear to be darker than the surrounding regions due to their lower temperature. They are found in association with regions of extremely high magnetic fields. Sunspots may cover an area of billions of square kilometres, large enough to be seen with the naked eye. This images was obtained with the White Light Patrol camera at the Hilltop Dome facility of the Sacramento Peak Observatory in the USA. | |
