Supernova remnant E0102-72.3, composite image. This supernova remnant was produced by a massive star that exploded in a nearby galaxy called the Small Magellanic Cloud. It is 200, 000 light years away, in the constellation of Tucana. The visible light data (red and green) is from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and the Very Large Telescope (VLT). The X-ray data (blue) is from the Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO). The area covered by this image is around 400 light years across. Image published in 2018. For the optical image without the X-ray data, see C046/3288. | |
